Chiswick Area Guide

About the Area

The closest you’ll get to “an escape from the city smog” but still 30 minutes away from said smog, Chiswick is a charmer. With its leafy green areas and coffee shops aplenty, this former fishing village is more village than fishy. Young families flock here to raise their brood and media types escape here to take a break from their hectic city jobs.

But don’t let this sometimes-slumbering borough mislead you. This is festival haven, yeah? Bedford Park Festival, Tidefest, the Devonshire Road Street Party, the Chiswick Book Festival and Magic Lantern Festival all happen within this area flanked by the Thames to the south. A picnic at Turnham Green (stock up on picnic goodies at the Waitrose across the road) is a typical sunny weekend activity.

Chiswick is served by tube stations at Ravenscourt Park, Stamford Brook and Turnham Green on the district line; Turnham Green is also on the Piccadilly line. There are trains from Chiswick Overground to Waterloo, which take 27 minutes via Clapham Junction and Vauxhall. See; close enough for daily commutes but far enough to not stare into the smog from your room window every night.
