How To: Declutter your home

11/01/2022

After a busy festive period, your home may need to recover with some much-needed decluttering. This may even be one of your New Year resolutions!

This process can be overwhelming however and without your own personal Marie Kondo, it can be a seemingly impossible task alongside the host of other new year’s admin.

We’ve put together a how-to guide with our favourite tips and tricks to help you with New Year’s decluttering and keep your home consistently clutter-free for the year.

Get storage smart

Tame your clutter by ensuring every single thing in your house has a home. Get smart about storage and utilise decorative bins and baskets for odds and ends or like-items together. Ikea, H&M Home, Wilko, and Primark have some great options at affordable prices too.

Start small

If you start trying to declutter your entire house at once, you will always feel overwhelmed. Decide on the space you want to start with and stick with it until it is completed. We suggest starting with some of the most common clutter spaces such as the pantry or home office.

Donate

Have piles and piles of random cables and old clothes you haven’t worn in years? Get in touch with your local charity or donation centre, they will make much more use of these items that no longer serve you.

Daily decluttering

Most of us put off decluttering until it becomes a giant, time consuming project. Why not put aside 15 minutes every day to pack away and pick things up around the home instead? Its takes 21 days to form a habit and this habit will certainly be one worth gaining for the future.

Be kind to yourself

Decluttering your home will not happen overnight, so be patient and appreciate that this is a process and will take a number of days or even weeks. Always remember to celebrate the small wins, however small!
